Pass your NSC audit before the government schedules one.

First Call Compliance and Safety helps Alberta commercial carriers find and fix compliance problems while they are still fixable. National Safety Code audits for Alberta Transportation, COR audits through AMTA, led by Ken Van Rentergem, an auditor listed on both approved auditor lists.

The problem

By the time Alberta Transportation writes to you, your options have already narrowed.

The carrier profile is a running record. Every roadside inspection, every conviction, every reportable collision lands on it, and it keeps score quietly for months before anyone tells you there is a problem.

When the score crosses a threshold, the province acts. That can mean a warning letter, a required safety plan, a formal facility audit, a conditional safety fitness rating, or in the worst case the loss of your operating authority. At that point you are not fixing a filing habit. You are defending your business.

There is a better order of operations. Have someone who audits to the same standard look first, tell you exactly what an auditor would write down, and give you the time to fix it quietly.

Why First Call

An auditor the province already approved, on your side of the table.

Most carriers meet a third party auditor for the first time on the day of their audit. Ken Van Rentergem does the same work, using the same standards, before the government letter arrives. You find the gaps. Not the auditor.

How it works

A straight process, with no surprises at the end.

  1. Scope call

A short conversation about your fleet, your operating status, your current carrier profile and what prompted the call. No charge, no obligation.

  2. Records review

Driver files, logs, maintenance records, policies and training records get reviewed against the National Safety Code standards that apply to your operation.

  3. Findings report

A written report in the same language an auditor uses, separating what would be an outright finding from what is merely untidy.

  4. Corrective action plan

A prioritised list of what to fix, in what order, with the templates and the process changes to make it stick.

  5. Follow up

A re check once the fixes are in, so you know the gap is actually closed and not just documented.

Common questions

What triggers an NSC audit in Alberta?

Most audits are triggered by your carrier profile. When on road performance, collisions or convictions push your profile into the monitoring range, Alberta Transportation can escalate from a warning letter to a required safety plan to a full facility audit. Audits are also triggered by a serious collision, a public complaint, a request for a change in operating status, and as a routine new carrier compliance review during your first period of operation.

How is a First Call audit different from a government audit?

The scope and the standards are the same. The consequence is not. A government audit produces a rating and, if you fall short, an intervention. A First Call review produces a findings list and a corrective action plan that you control, on your timeline, before anything is on the record.

Do you work with small fleets and owner operators?

Yes. A single truck operation carries the same National Safety Code obligations as a hundred truck fleet, and it usually has nobody in the office whose job is compliance. Small carriers are a large part of the work.

Do you have to come to our yard?

Not always. Driver files, logs, maintenance records and policies can often be reviewed remotely from scans or your existing software. Maintenance reviews and full mock facility audits are better done on site. We will tell you which one your situation needs before you commit to anything.

What does it cost?

It depends on fleet size, how many drivers and units are in scope, and whether the review is remote or on site. Send a short description of your operation and you will get a written quote with a fixed scope, not an hourly open end.
